Empowering 500 Rwandan women living with HIV/AIDS

Project Overview

During this reporting period, HRFRA continued implementing the Empowering 500 Rwandan Women Living with HIV/AIDS project with the aim of improving access to legal information, psychosocial support, and economic empowerment opportunities for women living with HIV/AIDS. Despite limited financial resources, the project maintained its commitment to supporting vulnerable women through community-based interventions, awareness activities, and referrals to appropriate service providers.

The project focused on strengthening women's knowledge of their rights, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting their social and economic inclusion through partnerships with local authorities, health facilities, and civil society organizations.

What Activities Were Completed?

During the reporting period, HRFRA implemented the following key activities:

• Conducted community awareness sessions on the rights of women living with HIV/AIDS, emphasizing protection from discrimination, gender-based violence, and access to essential services.
• Provided legal information and counselling to women facing family disputes, discrimination, property-related conflicts, and employment challenges.
• Offered psychosocial support through individual counselling and peer support meetings, helping beneficiaries build confidence and resilience.
• Strengthened referral pathways by linking beneficiaries with health facilities, legal aid providers, and social protection services whenever specialized support was required.
• Engaged community leaders and local stakeholders in discussions aimed at reducing stigma and promoting the inclusion of women living with HIV/AIDS.

Results Achieved

The project contributed to meaningful improvements in the lives of participating women. Beneficiaries demonstrated increased awareness of their legal rights and available protection mechanisms. Several women successfully accessed legal assistance, healthcare, and psychosocial services through the established referral network.

Community engagement activities also contributed to greater understanding among local leaders and service providers regarding the rights and needs of women living with HIV/AIDS, helping create a more supportive environment for beneficiaries.

Although the project reached fewer beneficiaries than originally anticipated due to funding constraints, those who participated received more comprehensive and individualized support.

Challenges

The project experienced several challenges during implementation, including:

• Limited financial resources restricted the number of beneficiaries and activities that could be conducted.
• Persistent stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS continued to discourage some women from openly seeking assistance.
• Economic hardship among beneficiaries increased demand for livelihood support beyond the project's available resources.
• Transportation costs limited participation for some women living in remote communities.

Despite these challenges, HRFRA adapted its implementation strategy by strengthening partnerships with local institutions and prioritizing the most vulnerable beneficiaries.

Looking Ahead

In the coming reporting period, HRFRA plans to:

• Expand community awareness initiatives to reach additional women and local leaders.
• Strengthen legal aid and psychosocial support services for women experiencing discrimination and violence.
• Increase collaboration with health facilities, community organizations, and government institutions to improve referral mechanisms.
• Mobilize additional resources to expand livelihood and economic empowerment opportunities for women living with HIV/AIDS.
• Continue advocating for a more inclusive environment where women living with HIV/AIDS can fully enjoy their rights without stigma or discrimination.
