When training athletes, there is more to skills-enhancement. There is that inside purpose for training athletes aside from inculcating discipline.
Aside from the year-round trainings and capacity building sessions, athletes get to have a chance to promote sportsmanship in the community.
The University’s varsity athletes participate in tournaments inside and outside the province in various events like football, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. They are given the chance to travel in the nearby towns of Negros Oriental and in the adjacent provinces of Cebu, Negros Occidental, Siquijor, Bohol, Iloilo and in some parts of Mindanao to join sports tournaments and friendship games.
In this way, they do not only promote the importance of proper training in sports events but they also advocate for sportsmanship, by making friends with their game opponents within the course of the tournament.
At their age, they need to acquaint and interact with fellow athletes in order for them to have that network or connection and a means for them to share their common concerns and best practices, as well. Through this sharing, they will be made more sensitive to their needs and be more appreciative of the training given to them by the University.
As with the community, the athletes are geared towards promoting sportsmanship by displaying good values, not just acquired skills, during the games. In this way, the community can see the inner purpose of what sports is truly about and that there is more to the games, it is building their character, a positive attitude and advocating wellness.
