Skills, Savings and Brighter Futures

Dear Friends,

Together, with your support, we have been able to achieve so much in the first six months of 2026. With determination and commitment, 98 young mothers in our Seed of Hope programme embraced free vocational training in Nairobi, Kariti, and Kangweni in Kitui County. Your support helped remove barriers to them taking part, to gaining new skills, growing in confidence and looking to the future with hope.

For many young women, becoming a mother at a young age means putting your own dreams on hold. For young mothers in Kenya, faced with immense responsibility of caring for a child, poverty, and limited opportunities, its a struggle to continue education, to gain skills and secure a steady income to survive. The challenges, plus the social stigma, can be isolating and completely overwhelming.

But with the right support, today, 98 young mothers engaged in Seed of Hope training are taking important steps towards building brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Next steps on their journey:

Young mothers on 6-month courses in Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy and Fashion & Fabric Design, and Catering & Hospitality courses will complete their training on 30th June, ready to start their 3-month internships and their careers in some of Kenya’s fastest growing industries. We will check in with them in September, to find out how they’re doing - including their employment status, their levels of income, financial independence, and ability to save.

Young Mothers Savings Scheme:

In April, we celebrated 38 young mothers at Seed of Hope Kangweni, who had completed their training and the ‘Young Mothers Savings Scheme’, each received £50 (Ksh 8,000) in savings. The scheme enabled young mothers to access childcare and attend training, develop entrepreneurial and financial skills, and graduate with seed-money for their own businesses. Each graduate, like Sharon (quoted below), had plans to invest in equipment, stock, or rent workspace, and turn their ideas into sustainable income-generation.

“I thank Seed of Hope for giving me the opportunity to learn for free, and for ensuring that my baby was happy and well cared for while I attended classes. During my training, I was able to save some money, which I used to buy a mirror, a table, a blow dryer, and a barbering machine.”

“With the savings I have received today, I am now ready to take the next step. I have already identified business premises, and this will help me pay rent and purchase essential consumables such as hair conditioner, shampoo, hair oil, and braids."

“I am truly grateful for this opportunity. It has given me hope, confidence, and a clear path towards building a better future for myself and my child.”

Thank you for standing with young mothers in Kenya - we are so grateful for your support!

With love and gratitude,

Leela and the team
