Introduction

The WLiT Fellowship Pokhara 2024/25 is a six-month program aimed at empowering young women in technology through technical training, leadership development, and mentorship. It targets women pursuing computer science and IT-related courses in Pokhara and neighboring regions.

The program began with a 12-day bootcamp held from July 19 to August 3, 2024, combining online and in-person sessions. Hosted at multiple venues, the bootcamp laid the foundation for the fellows’ transformative journey, focusing on both technical and leadership skills to prepare them for the tech industry and beyond.

Bootcamp Overview

The bootcamp encompassed:

  1. Technical Sessions: Training on JavaScript, NodeJS, ExpressJS, MongoDB, and Git, supplemented by daily progress updates on a Simplilearn course.
  2. Leadership Sessions: Focused on goal setting, design thinking, time management, and impactful problem-solving.
  3. Hackathon: Fellows worked in groups to apply their skills to real-world problems, culminating in project presentations.

Key Highlights:

  • Online sessions began with JavaScript basics and advanced concepts, followed by a Simplilearn certification.
  • In-person sessions included technical workshops on backend development and leadership sessions on empathy, teamwork, and design thinking.
  • A two-day hackathon served as the capstone, allowing fellows to develop and pitch innovative projects.

Schedule Highlights

  • July 19-27 (Online): JavaScript basics, advanced concepts, leadership sessions, and Simplilearn course completion.
  • July 28-August 1 (In-Person): Technical training on Git, NodeJS, ExpressJS, MongoDB; leadership sessions on empathy, time management, and design thinking.
  • August 2-3: Hackathon and final presentations showcasing the fellows’ projects.

Hackathon Summary

The hackathon brought fellows together to work in teams, applying their newly acquired technical skills to develop innovative web-based solutions. Under the guidance of group mentors, participants collaborated on impactful projects, which were presented during the closing ceremony.

Closing Ceremony

The bootcamp concluded on August 3, 2024, with a final presentation of hackathon projects. Fellows, mentors, and facilitators reflected on the transformative journey, celebrating the milestones achieved.

Next Steps

Moving forward, the fellowship will include:

  1. Monthly Meetups: Focused on both technical and leadership skills.
  2. Mentorship: Pairing fellows with women leaders in tech for one-on-one guidance.
  3. Internships: Opportunities with partner organizations to gain real-world experience.

Conclusion

The WLiT Fellowship Pokhara 2024/25 Bootcamp successfully set the stage for the fellows’ seven-month journey, equipping them with essential skills and a supportive network to thrive in tech and leadership roles.
