Mama Koite, WFM-IGP Gender Liaison

Thanks to your generous support, WFM-IGP has been able to strengthen and expand its initiatives promoting gender justice and women’s leadership over the past three months. The following report details the work of WFM-IGP in bringing local activists together at the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the UN in March.

The 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women

As part of its objective to open space for grassroots civil society organizations to influence intergovernmental decision-making mechanisms, WFM-IGP sponsored a delegation of young female activists from its partner organization MUSONET (the Mali branch of FEMNET) to participate in the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62) at the United Nations. The delegation was headed my our Gender Liaison Mrs. Mama Koité along with her organization’s program officer and her partner from the University of Jaen, a professor of women’s issues and international relations.

In coordination with MUSONET and Plateforme Des Femmes Leaders du Mali, WFM-IGP held a side-event on the margins of CSW62 which focused on the practice of media coverage during conflict situations through the perspective of women. Panelists concentrated on the impact of conflict and crises on the empowerment of rural women and girls, and offered comparative insight into the situation of rural women in the Spanish region of Andalusia, highlighting key challenges, current initiatives and steps moving forward. This event allowed delegates from MUSONET not only to raise awareness of the horrific situation of women in Mali but also to strengthen the organiztion's network by participating in cross-cultural dialogue on women and the media in conflict and post-conflict situations.

WFM-IGP also partnered with UNWomen to organize a side-event which facilitated an intersectional and intergenerational conversation on what it will take to leave no rural woman or girl behind in the quest for women’s global equality by the year 2030. The event was headed by UNWomen Executive Director and attended by close to a 100 participants.

Our Sincere Thanks

Your support has helped us see great progress so far in our fight for gender justice and women's leadership and continues to motivate us to work towards our goals. In addition to WFM-IGP’s global advocacy work, we are working to coordinate and sponsor a number of local initiatives related to gender justice, Women, Peace and Security, and women’s leadership around the world in 2018. We hope you will continue to support this cause by sharing our campaign with friends and family.
