Dear friends and supporters,
Thank you for supporting Uganda’s National Association for Women’s Action in Development (NAWAD) through Gender Action’s Global Giving appeal. We’re proud to report that with your support, Gender Action and NAWAD have launched ‘Banking on Health’ – a comprehensive report on World Bank and African Development Bank investments in reproductive health and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. From Japan to Uganda, Gender Action and NAWAD have been busy conducting hard-hitting advocacy to protect the women’s rights to good health.
On October 10, 2012, Gender Action together with NAWAD and our Cameroonian partner LUKMEF released the comprehensive advocacy report and database, ‘Banking on Health: World Bank and African Development Bank Spending on Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa’ at the World Bank (WB)/IMF Fall Annual Meetings in Tokyo. The report analyzes World Bank and African Development Bank (AfDB) investments across sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting how good quality matters as much as high quantity in reproductive health and HIV/AIDS spending.
On November 14, 2012, NAWAD staff went on local radio to present program on the obstacles to good reproductive health and HIV/AIDS care in Uganda highlighted in ‘Banking on Health’. On November 15, 2012, NAWAD conducted a workshop with 50 participants including healthcare practitioners, patients and local government officials. NAWAD presented the ‘Banking on Health’ report and provided participants with copies. In small groups, participants identified additional challenges to those highlighted in ‘Banking on Health’ that prevent women from accessing care, including women’s frequent lack of pregnancy clothes, sexual coercion by male partners, and women’s discomfort with birthing practices at health centers. Check out our new photos under the photos tab from the November 15 advocacy day!
NAWAD’s advocacy with its Ugandan partners has paved the way to hold their government and IFIs accountable for their investments – for that, we have you to thank! We are drawing our GlobalGiving project to a close but welcome you to support NAWAD directly by emailing: nawadorg@gmail.com
Stay tuned to Gender Action (www.genderaction.org) to support Gender Action directly, and learn more about our ongoing reproductive health and HIV/AIDS advocacy and the other ways you can support women across the world to promote gender justice in all International Financial Institution investments.
