Hello donors, friends.
Today I want to share with you a personal reflection from my experience working with the most amazing women in very special communities in México. Sometimes, it's hard to stop for a moment and realize all the great things that are happening around you. A few days ago, I did that. I was talking to many of this women about how they could change their lives with access to education and organization among them and other members of their communities. Then I stopped and listen to them, and all the amazing things they are already doing.
Some of them were mothers and traditional midwives. They don't know how to speak english or use technology (that's why I met them), but Oh my god do they know about life and community development. They are doing a wonderful job and offering alternatives to women and families in rural and indigenous comminitues. Meeting them made me realize that we don't need not be in centers of power (New York, Mexico City, London) to do powerful things. I was unaware of the labor that midwives do and it is really fundamental. Helping other women give birth, bringing new lives, is empowering them in the most important and at the same time, most vulnerable moment in their lives.
Today, and thanks to you, I recognize the work of the mothers and midwives who give power to more women. I had never been so clear that the public health system is a manifestation of a hegemonic system that favors the centralization over small communities, comfort over effort, money over life. I am deeply thankful to all the people involved in making this kind of experience happen. Thank you for making me recognize this: it helped me remember my commitment to the communities and that the decision of what we do every day and what projects we support and build can and does make a difference.
