Summary

This project establishes safe spaces for adolescent girls across nine villages in Njeru, addressing critical needs identified through baseline and power analysis. Through mentorship, life skills, vocational training, and community engagement, we will empower 500 vulnerable girls to build economic independence, exercise their rights, and live free from violence and exploitation.

Challenge

Adolescent girls in Njeru's nine villages face a devastating cycle of poverty, violence, and lost opportunity. Our baseline reveals 88% lack jobs, 14% experience sexual violence, 12% are already married, and 11% have children. With 94% lacking health and education access, girls are trapped in exploitation. Without safe spaces, mentorship, or skills training, they cannot escape this cycle or build a future of dignity and independence.

Solution

This project establishes nine Safe Spaces-one in each Njeru village-offering weekly mentorship, life skills, SRHR education, and vocational training in tailoring, hairdressing, and crafts. Trained local Girl Power Advocates mentor girls, while community engagement shifts harmful norms. Girls gain economic independence, confidence, and knowledge to protect themselves, breaking cycles of poverty, violence, and early marriage.

Long-Term Impact

This project will create lasting change for 500 girls and their communities. Evidence from similar ELA programs in Uganda shows girls are 48% more likely to engage in income-generating activities, teenage pregnancy drops by 34%, and girls are 62% less likely to marry early . These empowered girls will become mentors, breaking cycles of poverty and exploitation for generations
