Empower Nepali Survivors of Human Trafficking

This October, through funds raised on GlobalGiving, SASANE successfully trained 30 women and girls in preparation of the Nepal Paralegal Certificate Examination. The 30 participants are all highly at-risk girls and survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Many are women seeking to leave Kathmandu’s internal sex industry through SASANE’s help.

The funds donated by GlobalGiving’s generous supporters covered trainees’ travel expenditures, enabling women in tenuous financial situations to attend the daily training sessions. The funds were also used to cover the costs of all training materials.  (See our expenditure report for a more detailed explanation).

SASANE staff member and former paralegal trainee, Sonu Shakya, shined as the Paralegal Instructor, receiving excellent reviews from her trainees and from other SASANE staff.  Sonu led intensive workshops for two groups of 15 women and girls twice a day, 6 days a week, for four weeks. Girls received instruction on Nepal’s general legal context and structures, gender-based violence, foreign employment and anti-trafficking laws, and on working professionally with victims.

In the following weeks, the trainees receive hands-on training with SASANE Paralegals at police posts across Kathmandu Valley,

Sonu says that now that her students “understand the law, they will not only be able help victims professionally at police posts, but will also be able to stand up for their own rights and help other women in their workplaces and communities.”

The 30 women and girls will take the Paralegal Certificate Exam in December, and can then begin working at police stations in Kathmandu Valley and other districts. Stay tuned for more updates and THANK YOU for your amazing support!
