Thank you for helping homeless kids stay in school

By Jennifer Pelton | Director of Development

Thank you for your support of the Public Justice Center’s work to help homeless kids stay in school. You have helped the PJC educate homeless students and their families, in Baltimore City and throughout Maryland, on their right to stay in school and receive the supportive services they need. We have distributed “know your rights” brochures in English and Spanish, educated families, students, and people who serve homeless students about their rights, initiated a peer-to-peer outreach project, and trained school staff on identifying and serving homeless students. By working with several school districts, we’ve helped ensure that more homeless students are receiving the transportation, tutoring, and other services they need. And with this support, students miss fewer days of school, earn better grades and achieve improved results on standardized tests.

We initially set up a profile for this project on GlobalGiving as part of Athletes for Hope’s Race for a Cause in 2009. Given that the race has long since concluded, we’ve decided to wrap up this way of sharing project updates. But our work continues. In this difficult economic climate, education officials report that the number of homeless students is rising. We will continue to help young people overcome instability in their lives and achieve their academic dreams.

You can stay up-to-date on the PJC’s work with homeless and highly mobile students at www.publicjustice.org. We’ll also share occasional updates via our e-newsletter, Facebook, and Twitter. Thank you for your partnership on this project.
