The PJC is especially thankful for Ed Neufville and all of the donors who shared support for our Education Stability project. This project helps homeless kids stay in school despite housing loss or disruption. A federal law called McKinney-Vento provides significant rights for kids who lose permanent housing – including continued enrollment in their original school or immediate enrollment in a new, more convenient school. Under this law, school can remain the one constant source of stability for kids whose lives are racked by eviction, foreclosure or other issues outside their control. Unfortunately many school districts across the nation do not comply with this law. Thousands of kids are not identified as homeless and are blocked from education. With the support of our generous donors, the PJC educates the educators about the rights of homeless kids and reaches out directly to the families who need to know their rights. Our work has reformed school practices and procedures around Maryland. Measurable results are dramatic: far fewer missed days of school, much better grades and dramatically improved results on standardized tests. Keeping kids in school is a key ingredient in the recipe for lifelong success. For more information on this project or other PJC work: www.publicjustice.org.
