Every summer Haiti Projects holds an artisan summer camp to fifty girls in Fond des Blancs. They learn to emborider, sew and cook up yummy Haitian specialties.
This summer the girls are working on sewing a Skirt to embroider with their own unique designs. In cooking class, they learned to make pen patat (sweet potato bread), diri jadinye (rice with vegetables), kremas (coconut cream drink) and natural fruit juice made from 7 different types of fruits the girls brought From home.
Haiti Projects organizes a few other camps each summer but the artisana camp stands out for a few reasons. Not only are the girls having a blast but they are also learning skills that could lead to future employment opportunities. It is really special to watch our employees teach yougner girls the trade, and some of them are teaching their own daughters.
Each year demand for one of the fifty spots increases. The girls walk on average of 45 minutes in the hot Haitian sun each way, which is a reflection of their motivaiton. With your online purchases of Haiti Projects artisan goods or a donation we can open the camp up to even more girls.
