Empower 100 Girls in NYC with Education and Sport

Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is a nationally-recognized, community-based youth development organization that combines the power of education with access to the artistic sport of figure skating to help girls of color succeed in school and become strong leaders. Over 25 years, Figure Skating in Harlem has holistically empowered thousands of girls to thrive academically, while promoting their physical and emotional well-being and personal growth.

With a worldwide pandemic imposing hardship and heavy restrictions on communities acrossthe country, the 2020-21 program year was uniquely challenging. In the face of COVID-19, which has disproportionately affected communities of color, our supportive programming has been even more critical for girls and young women from these communities. Our community
came together and supported each other to ensure our girls achieved their goals.

Through our unique model that combines access to physical activity through figure skating, academic tutoring, social-emotional support, and college guidance, FSH has ensured that our girls have the tools, resiliency, and safe space to achieve their goals through and beyond the pandemic. We have proved that our organization—like our girls—is strong, resilient, and ready
to overcome unprecedented challenges to thrive.

We believe our 2021 graduating senior,Jacqueline Ayala, expressed the power and strength of FSH when she shared the following at our graduation celebration this spring:

“COVID-19 taught everyone, and me, to be flexible and to expect the unexpected. While I witnessed all the change occurring in the world, I was grateful that Figure Skating in Harlem was the one thing that remained consistent in my life. I came to Figure Skating in Harlem as a sheltered, young girl who was afraid of what the world had in store for her. Now, I have blossomed into a much more confident woman excited for my future endeavors. In the face of unprecedented events, I am grateful that I am able to tackle obstacles with the boost of confidence that being in this family has provided me.”

During the 2020-2021 academic year and season, FSH supported our students during an incredibly challenging time and ensured that they had the opportunity to meet their academic, personal, and professional goals, despite the pandemic. A few of our major programmatic accomplishments were:

-       An estimated 287 girls benefited from a range of virtual and in-person FSH services and activities.

-       An average FSH student maintained a GPA between 81/100 and 86/100.

-       FSH seniors achieved 100% college acceptance and enrollment for 2021.

-       Our 10 seniors were accepted into 30+ schools and earned nearly $250,000 in scholarships.

-       74% of students reported the program positively affected their schoolwork.

-       75% of students reported an improvement in their physical fitness.

-       On average, 84% of students reported improved leadership, and the vast majority reported improved confidence and self-esteem.

-       96% of our girls reported feeling safe and supported at FSH.

In addition to these accomplishments, FSH has received national and international accolades for our work improving educational, health, and wellness outcomes and for promoting gender and racial equity. In December 2020, Figure Skating in Harlem girls were featured in Teen Vogue. In February, PBS selected FSH and our students to perform a special on-ice tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. In March, CBS featured the organization and our important work in empowering young girls in underserved communities.

Now we are focused squarely on our goals for this year—our 25th Anniversary!  In the 2021-22 academic year, our students need our services more than ever. Low-income communities of color have been hit hardest by the pandemic. By providing increased one-on-one academic assistance, access to a full-time social worker, increased ice time with health precautions and social distancing, and a strong sisterhood, we hope to support our students and ensure they can succeed in school and in their future careers despite the effects of COVID-19 or other challenges. Our FY22 goals are to:

  1. Cultivate our girls into strong readers, writers, and public speakers.
  2. Enhance our girls’ STEM skills for 21st century education and careers.
  3. Promote physical fitness and the development of crucial life skills and qualities through figure skating.
  4. Ensure our girls have a solid foundation of social-emotional skills and healthy habits required for resilience and long-term success.

Also, for our 25th anniversary year, the FSH board decided to embark on a transformational new endeavor that we call Pipeline 2 Power (P2P). P2P is a monumental initiative for our organization that will enable us to greatly increase our reach and impact well into the future by tapping into our community of 1,500+ alumnae. P2P aims to provide personal skills development activities, internships, career development opportunities, and mentoring for our students and alumnae, ages 6 to 30. In addition to helping our students navigate high school and college application processes, we will extend our support to alumnae in college and the professional world. By keeping the FSH sisterhood strong, we will continue to support our graduates on their career paths and in their adult lives. The result will be a pipeline of powerful girls and young women that are prepared to thrive as school, business, and community leaders.
