Starting Our Year, Like our Days

Health and wellbeing have always been at the heart center of Kranti’s work with girls from Mumbai’s Red Light Areas. We realized early on, that the Krantikaris first need to heal from their childhood traumas, feel safe, well, emotionally at peace and happy, before we can do education, or learn any skills. This is why, health and wellbeing practices like Yoga, meditation, psychotherapy, art, music and body movement therapy have all been integral parts of Kranti’s programs for the Krantikaris.

At the Kranti home in Mumbai, we start every morning with Yoga and meditation. This sets us up for the day with positive energy and mindfulness. So, we thought, just like our mornings, why don’t we focus on health and wellbeing to start off our year?! This will set up the Krantikaris with positive energy for the year to come!

We have been spending our mornings of this year, going to the beach in Mumbai to do Yoga and meditation, before the Indian summer gets too hot for us to be able to do work out on the beach. On Kranti’s anniversary, on International Women’s Day, the Krantikaris did water sports in the ocean. Krantikari Taniya, who is a certified Zumba instructor, supported by Move To Empower, did a series of Zumba workshops for girls and women, leading up to International Women’s Day. Taniya believes that Zumba and dance can be a healthy means of expression, a path to healing and finding joy, for girls and women, much like it was for her.

We hope our self care, our focus on health and wellbeing, inspires you, our supporters, to also start off your year on this note of mindfulness, peace and joy! We, Krantikaris, are sending lots of positive energies and love to all of you!
