OBHIZATRIK School, a sustainable initiative by the OBHIZATRIK Foundation, was established in 2013 with a noble mission: to provide free, quality education to underprivileged children in Bangladesh. The high cost of education in the country often prevents children from low-income families from attending school. OBHIZATRIK School seeks to address this issue by offering free education, thereby enabling these children to break free from the cycle of poverty. The school aims to empower them to become educated and financially independent citizens, contributing positively to the future of Bangladesh. Through this initiative, OBHIZATRIK Foundation is committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of their financial background, has the opportunity to receive a quality education and build a better future.

Challenge

The primary challenge that OBHIZATRIK School addresses is the lack of access to quality education for children from impoverished backgrounds in Bangladesh. The high cost of education in the country is a significant barrier, preventing many children from attending school. This issue is particularly severe in remote areas such as Charlata in Chalitabunia Union, Rangabali Upazila, Patuakhali District, Barishal Division. Before the establishment of OBHIZATRIK School in Charlata in 2019, there were no local schools, forcing students to travel 5 kilometers to access education. The residents of Charlata, who are mostly extremely poor and landless, face additional challenges such as lack of electricity, basic healthcare, and poor communication and transportation systems. These factors collectively hinder the educational opportunities for children in this region, making it difficult for them to break free from the cycle of poverty. OBHIZATRIK School aims to overcome these obstacles by providing free, quality education and comprehensive support to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow.

Solution

To address the challenges faced by underprivileged children in accessing quality education, OBHIZATRIK School has implemented a comprehensive support system. This system ensures that no student drops out due to financial constraints and that every child can exercise their right to education. The school provides free learning materials, access to a library, daily snacks, cooked meals, and monthly grocery bags for the children's families. Additionally, students receive monthly health check-ups and festive support, and their guardians benefit from livelihood support through the OBHIZATRIK Shokkhom project.

The key components of a comprehensive support system:

1. Learning Materials: Free academic resources, including textbooks, stationery, and uniforms.
2. Library Facilities: A well-stocked library to foster a love for reading.
3. Nutrition: Daily snacks and weekly cooked meals to support physical and cognitive development.
4. Family Support: Monthly grocery bags and livelihood support for families.
5. Health Services: Monthly health check-ups and free medicines.
6. Festive Support: Iftar meals, Eid meals, and new clothing during significant festivals.
7. Annual Events: Sports and festival days to build community and teamwork.
8. Co-curricular Activities: Various activities like martial arts, arts and crafts, cultural sessions, and study tours for holistic development.

Established in 2019, the school has grown from 100 to over 250 students by 2022, leading to an expansion in 2023. The school now has six rooms, including classrooms, a library, and a medical care corner, along with a playground and drinking water facilities. It offers classes from pre-education to Class Five, with plans to extend to high school. This holistic approach ensures a safe and conducive learning environment, promoting the overall well-being and development of the students.

We are delighted to report that we have prepared and finalized the planning phase. We have condcted various stakeholder disclosure to ensure the statement of need and the outline of implementation. One of our stakeholdes, a young girl named Arohi, shared how the idea of the new school has given her hope and will provide her the opportunity to pursue her dreams of becoming a teacher.

In recent months, OBHIZATRIK Foundation has been actively engaging with local communities and stakeholders to promote the importance of education. We have conducted several community meetings and awareness sessions to encourage parents to send their children to school. These efforts have been well-received, with many parents expressing their gratitude and support for the project.
