Empower Families by Restoring His Sight

Across Pakistan, millions of men shoulder the responsibility of providing for their families while facing mounting economic challenges. Global conflicts, rising fuel prices, inflation and increasing living costs have made it harder than ever for breadwinners to earn a sustainable livelihood. For many, losing their eyesight means losing their income. With an estimated 12% of Pakistan's population living with some form of visual impairment, access to free eye care is often the difference between providing a meal for the family or living in poverty. As the largest provider of free eye care in Pakistan, LRBT treats 3.4 million patients every year, of whom nearly 1.67 million (49%) are men. Through the generous support of donors, LRBT restores sight, independence and dignity, enabling men from underserved communities to return to work and continue supporting their families. One such beneficiary is 23-year-old Barkat from Pakistan's scenic Swat Valley. As the sole breadwinner, Barkat earned a modest living selling kebabs to tourists until bilateral cataracts gradually robbed him of his vision. Everyday tasks became increasingly difficult, and he feared that blindness would leave his family without an income. Unable to afford treatment, his future seemed uncertain. Hope arrived when Barkat sought care at LRBT's Odigram Hospital. Following comprehensive examinations, he successfully underwent cataract surgery in both eyes, completely free of charge thanks to compassionate donors. His sight was restored, allowing him to return to work with renewed confidence and once again provide for his loved ones. Today, Barkat describes his restored vision as a second chance at life. His story demonstrates that every cataract surgery funded through LRBT does far more than restore sight—it restores livelihoods, strengthens families and empowers communities.
