Soccer Without Borders uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing under-served youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success. Our program serves over 1900 refugee youth annually from more than 6 countries. The majority of SWB youth do not have access to formal education. At SWB we offer English courses and educational workshops on a daily basis and continue our academics and social-emotional learning with our unique on-field program model.
Uganda is home to one of the largest populations of refugees in the world, with an estimated 100,000+ refugees living in Kampala alone. In Kampala and the surrounding areas, the refugee population faces great obstacles. 47% of SWB participants have been separated from parents and/or family members, making them more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Among the many obstacles they face, refugees in the urban settings often say that the biggest barrier they face is lack of access to education.
SWB's approach is non-traditional, using soccer as a hook and taking a whole person approach to participant development: mind, body, and voice. At SWB, youth find a safe, positive and inclusive learning environment where obstacles can be overcome. Participants gain crucial education opportunities and are able to build meaningful, long-term relationships with their teammates and coach-mentors. Our program offers 3 key types of activities: Soccer, Education and Community-building.
SWB reaches more than 1,900 youth each year through daily programs, leagues, camps, coach trainings, and special events. Each day 450 youth attend programming, accessing learning opportunities and English language support when they otherwise would not have access to formal education. SWB youth gain a safe space to learn and grow while creating meaningful relationships with peers and mentors. Through our programming, youth gain the confidence and skills they need to pursue their dreams.
