Thirst No More Corporation (TNMC) has been in partnership with the Himalayan Tribal Community Development Nepal (HTCDN) organization in the past two years, providing families in need with entrepreneurial opportunities through goat farming. We understand that many families in the Kathamandu, Chitwan, Lalitpur regions are dealing with lack of employment opportunities and hunger relief issues, that are devastating many people who are finding it impossible to provide employment and nutrition to these regions.
Starting with nutrition, TNMC has provided monthly food distributions in partnership with HTCDN for the past 5 years. Many people have received lentils, cooking oil, grains, and other nutrients over the years, however 2 years ago we realized that we wanted to encourage these communities to have an opportunity to sustain themselves. Understanding that land masses are limited due to the mountainous terrain, we came up with goat farming as a viable way of generationg wealth and feeding their families.
Currently, as we continue to provide nutrition on a monthly basis to these regions, we have identified 7 families so far that have benefitted from our goat farming initiative. We start each family with 3 goats (1 male and 2 females); providing a goat pen and medical support for the goats. We have had amazing results withing 6 months for each family, with their goat poputlation nearly doubling each time. The goats essential provide milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, clothing like mohair and cashmere, leather, and nutrient rich manure. These goats can be used to both support the families in need, and to provide income; thus we are hoping to generate a whole region of entrepreneurs. And the greatest part of all this, the program can be installed right on each family's property.
We have received so much appreciation from the 7 families on the program; we now want to expand to include as many as 1,800 other families in and around Nepal.
