A Spark of Change: Project Karigari — Powering Lives Through Skills and Employment

The Karigari Grassroots Skills Program unlocks creativity and potential across a wide spectrum of trades — ranging from stitching and dressmaking to beauty and wellness, painting, electrical and Solar training, mobile repairing, knitting and embroidery, and basic IT skills, as well as future-focused IT courses such as Power BI, Graphic Design and Digital Marketing . The program also extends into future skills, bridging the gap between traditional expertise and the evolving demands of the digital economy.

Recognizing that women and youth are key drivers of sustainable development, Karigari focuses on three critical domains:

  • Grassroots Skill Development – Strengthening heritage skills while nurturing modern entrepreneurship.
  • Digital Skill Development – Preparing learners for technology-driven careers in a rapidly evolving job market.
  • Professional Skill Training – Including agri-drone training, nursing training, and mobile journalism training, aligned with current industry needs.

For over three decades, Literacy India has been a pioneer in technology-aided education, evolving in step with the Industrial Revolution. As government policies increasingly emphasize job-ready skill building, Karigari ensures that no learner is left behind.

Impact: Our Approach

  • Understanding Needs – Area surveys and community assessments help identify the right beneficiaries.
  • Personalized Training – Skill assessments guide customized learning pathways.
  • Infrastructure & Resources – Training centres are equipped with modern tools and machinery.
  • Holistic Learning – Technical training is complemented by business workshops, motivational sessions, field visits, and experiential learning through hands-on activities such as electrical fitting and fault-finding on campus, along with internships.
  • Professional Readiness – Focused training in grooming, communication, and workplace etiquette.
  • Integration of the Dual Skill System – The Dual Skill System has been introduced to enhance students' employability by providing training in two complementary skills simultaneously. For example, students are trained in both Electrical and Solar Technician trades, enabling them to develop a broader skill set and multiple employment opportunities.
  • Career Navigation – Career counseling supports both job placement and entrepreneurship.
  • GBIP (Grassroots Business Incubation Program) – A launchpad for micro-enterprises that transform skills into sustainable businesses.

At Literacy India, we believe that skill-building goes beyond livelihood — it is a pathway to empowerment. With a special focus on urban youth, particularly young women, we are redefining career pathways, fostering resilience, and shaping a future where no dream is out of reach.

At Literacy India, we believe that skill-building goes beyond livelihood — it is a pathway to empowerment. With a special focus on urban youth, particularly young women, we are redefining career pathways, fostering resilience, and shaping a future where no dream is out of reach.

A Skill, A Dream, A New Beginning: Nandan ( Name Changed) 's Path to International Employment

Nandan( Name Changed) Thakur, a young man from Chandankiyari Block in Jharkhand, comes from an economically disadvantaged family whose livelihood primarily depends on small-scale agriculture. Married at a young age, Nandan( Name Changed) faced significant financial responsibilities soon after completing his Class 12 education. With limited income sources and increasing family obligations, he felt compelled to find a way to earn and support his household.

In search of better opportunities, Nandan(Name Changed) enrolled in the Basic Electrical Training Program at Literacy India's Jharkhand Centre. During the three-month vocational training course, he acquired practical skills in electrical wiring, installation, maintenance, repair work, and workplace safety. Alongside technical knowledge, the program also helped him develop confidence, discipline, responsibility, and a positive outlook toward his future.

Upon successfully completing the training, Nandan(Name Changed) began undertaking electrical work within his local community and started earning approximately 8,000 per month. While this provided some financial relief, employment opportunities in the rural area remained limited. Motivated to improve his income and career prospects, Nandan(Name Changed) expressed his desire to establish himself professionally and explore advanced opportunities in the electrical sector.

Recognizing his commitment and potential, Literacy India facilitated his enrollment in an Advanced Electrical Training Program through a partner organization. Nandan(Name Changed) demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout the advanced course and successfully completed the training, enhancing his technical expertise and employability.

His hard work led to a remarkable achievement when he secured employment with Shobha Enterprises, Dubai, becoming the first international placement beneficiary from the Centre. This milestone not only marked a turning point in Nandan(Name Changed) 's life but also set an inspiring example for other youth in the community.

Before joining the advanced training program, Nandan( Name Changed) 's monthly earnings 8,000. With his placement in Dubai, he is now expected to earn approximately 40,000 per month, along with additional benefits such as accommodation, food, medical facilities, and other employment perks. This substantial increase in income will significantly improve his family's living conditions and provide greater financial security for their future.
