The Karigari Grassroots Skills Program unlocks creativity and potential across a wide spectrum of trades—ranging from stitching and dressmaking to beauty and wellness, painting, electrical training, mobile repairing, knitting and embroidery, and basic IT skills, as well as future-focused IT courses such as Power BI. The program also extends into future skills, bridging the gap between traditional expertise and the evolving demands of the digital economy.
Recognizing that women and youth are key drivers of sustainable development, Karigari focuses on three critical domains:
For over three decades, Literacy India has been a pioneer in technology-aided education, evolving in step with the Industrial Revolution. As government policies increasingly emphasize job-ready skill building, Karigari ensures that no learner is left behind.
Impact: Our Approach
At Literacy India, we believe that skill-building goes beyond livelihood—it is a pathway to empowerment. With a special focus on urban youth, particularly young women, we are redefining career pathways, fostering resilience, and shaping a future where no dream is out of reach.
When Skills Create Opportunity
Name : Monita (Name Changed) Age 19 years Jharkhand
In a small village in rural Jharkhand, where livelihood opportunities are limited and daily life is marked by hardship, 18-year-old Monita Mahato ( Name Changed) is steadily reshaping her future. Born into a simple farming family, Monita’s life took a difficult turn after the untimely passing of her father. The responsibility of supporting the family fell entirely on her mother, along with Monita and her two brothers. With agriculture as the family’s only source of income, meeting daily needs became a constant struggle.
Despite completing his degree, Monita’s ( Name Changed) elder brother chose to remain in the village and work in the fields to support the family. Her younger brother continues his studies with aspirations of pursuing higher education. In this household, every dream is balanced against financial realities, and each family member contributes through hard work and sacrifice.
Monita ( Name Changed) is currently pursuing her graduation while also managing household responsibilities alongside her mother. Determined not to give up, she discovered a new opportunity when she learned about the knitting skill-development training at the Community Centre. Although the skill was entirely new to her, she enrolled in the course with enthusiasm. The initial days were challenging, but through consistent practice and dedication, she gradually mastered knitting and its allied techniques.
Encouraged by her progress, Monita ( Name Changed) was motivated to enroll in dual skill training in stitching, enabling her to diversify her livelihood options. This dual skill set has enhanced her ability to earn through both knitting and stitching, either within the community or through support from social enterprise initiatives.
After successfully completing the training, Monita (Name Changed) joined the Indha Project, where she began earning through knitting work. She also started receiving regular stitching orders through Literacy India and from her local village community. This skill-based engagement has provided her with a steady source of income, allowing her to contribute financially to her household at a young age.
Today, Monita’s (Name Changed) earnings support her family’s daily needs and bring a strong sense of pride and dignity to her mother and brothers. What truly distinguishes her is her discipline—she balances her education, household responsibilities, and income-generating work with quiet determination. She carefully saves her earnings, remaining committed to her long-term goal of pursuing nursing education in the future.
