The Karigari Grassroot Skills Program unlocks creativity and potential across a wide spectrum—from Stitching and Dressmaking to Beauty and Wellness, Painting, Electrical Training, Mobile Repairing, Embroidery, and Basic IT Skills.
It also extends into Future Skills, bridging the gap between traditional expertise and the demands of the digital economy.
Recognizing that women and youth are key drivers of sustainable development, Karigari focuses on three crucial domains:
For over two decades, Literacy India has been a pioneer in technology-aided education, staying in step with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As government policy shifts toward job-ready skill-building, Karigari ensures that no learner is left behind.
Impact: Our Approach
At Literacy India, we believe that skill-building is not just about livelihood—it’s about empowerment. With a special focus on urban youth, particularly young women, we’re redefining career pathways, fostering resilience, and shaping a future where no dream is out of reach.
Apu’s ( Name Changed) Path to Nursing: From a Tribal Village to a Nursing Profession
In the quiet tribal village of Sharabandi in Purulia, where schools are far away and daughters’ education is often seen as unnecessary, lives a young woman whose story has become an inspiration for many — Apu Majhi ( Name Changed)
Apu ( Name Changed) grew up in a Santhal tribal family. Her father is a small farmer struggling to make ends meet with meagre earnings. For him, like many others in the village, educating daughters felt like a burden. “What will she do after studying so much? It is costly, and unsafe for her to stay away in a hostel,” he would often say.
The nearest school was 7 kilometers away, and Apu ( Name Changed) walked that long distance every day just to attend classes. Despite the exhaustion and obstacles, she remained determined. With grit and passion, she not only continued but excelled in her studies—securing 442 marks in her Higher Secondary exams.
Her dream was clear: she wanted to become a nurse. But when she was selected for the Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery (ANM) training program, her father strongly resisted. Sending his daughter away for hostel-based education was unthinkable for him.
The project team stepped in, and the field staff, who had been working in Purulia’s tribal belts for years, sat with her father. Through patient counseling and repeated home visits, they assured him that the team would be there to support her, and that other classmates would also be joining the training. They explained how, after completing the training, Apu ( Name Changed) could help her own community, especially in addressing the healthcare crisis where families often relied on untrained workers. Gradually, his hesitation began to turn into hope.
Apu ( Name Changed) joined the Vananchal Nursing Training School. Hostel life and professional training were not easy for a girl from a remote tribal background. But Apu ( ( Name Changed) never gave up. She immersed herself in her studies, balancing theory with practical learning, and carried a deep sense of responsibility towards her community.
Today, Apu( ( Name Changed) works at Medinova Nursing Home in Jamshedpur, where she serves patients with compassion and care. She earns a decent stipend, stands on her own feet, and is now a role model for tribal girls in Purulia.
Her father, once doubtful, now proudly says:
“I never thought my daughter could achieve this. Today, she supports herself and helps others. am thankful that I trusted her dreams.
