When WISER opens its doors to girls, it’s about opening possibilities for them for socio-economic growth and development and building a solid future for them. They are able to access education, develop life skills and eventually transit to institutions of higher learning. In the long-term their agency is built to address the cyclical burden of poverty, disease, and gender-based violence girls face in Muhuru Bay. WISER girls become beacons of success in their community and show other girls that they, too, can be self-confident and have autonomy in their lives. According to the Global Partnership for Education, one additional year of schooling can increase earnings by approximately 10%, for WISER the four years of schooling is a game-changer.
28th July 2015 was a special day for the WISER family, the past, present & future converged in an event that hosted some of the alumnae. They visited WISER campus to give back to their community by providing mentorship sessions for the current girls, reconnect with their faculty mentors/teachers as well as strengthen their network. It was a great opportunity for the current girls to receive additional psychosocial support from former peers and to learn about future academic and career options. The alumnae shared stories of their education journey and the achievement this far. One of them stated, “WISER made me believe in myself. It gave me a caring family. It taught me to move through the world. WISER made that happen.” To date, 477 girls have graduated from WISER, a major achievement in a country where statistics show that less than 20% of girls aged 15 – 19 complete secondary education and even fewer go on to further education. Those who have completed colleges and universities are working in different sectors including Tech, Education, health and social work.
WISER’s alumni base now represents the single-largest cohort of high school educated women in a rural and marginalized area. This has been made possible by your generous donations. Thank you!
