Shea Masterclass for Shea Collectors and Processor

By Aisha Ojone Abu | Project Leader

Project Title: Empower 500 Nigeria Shea Processors Sustainably

Quarterly Progress Report: February 2026

Executive Summary

This quarter, the Better Life Program for the African Rural Woman (BLPARW) achieved a significant milestone in transforming the shea value chain for rural women. From February 10th to 12th, 2026, an intensive 3-day Masterclass was conducted in Zauna Beji, Niger State. The program successfully transitioned participants from subsistence gathering to professional, export-ready business ownership through technical training, cooperative management, and financial literacy.

The Ecosystem Partnership: A Collaborative Framework

The success of this initiative is rooted in a multi-stakeholder ecosystem that aligns international standards with community leadership:

  •  Better Life Program for the African Rural Woman (BLPARW): Provided overall program coordination, management, and project status oversight, introduced "Circular Shea Economy" concepts, and provided strategic insights into market access and international value chain dynamics.

  •  SME Development Agency: Facilitated core training in entrepreneurship, cooperative governance, and financial literacy

  •  Shea Tradition: Delivered hands-on technical instruction in "Grade A" processing and quality nut collection.

  •  Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC): Equipped processors with knowledge of export standards and food-grade packaging requirements.

Key Activities & Achievements
1. Professionalizing Shea Production

To meet international market demands, the training delivered specialized Shea Best Practices (SBP):

  •  Quality Collection: Participants learned to sort nuts by maturity to ensure low Free Fatty Acids (FFA), a requirement for premium markets.

  •  Modern Processing: Practical sessions covered optimal steaming times and modern techniques to achieve Grade A Shea Butter.

  •  Export Readiness: Facilitators taught the use of food-grade liners and strategies to avoid moisture contamination during storage.

2. Financial & Business Empowerment

Technical skills were paired with the financial literacy needed for business sustainability:

  •  Cooperative Governance: Training strengthened leadership, accountability, and collective bargaining skills within the local cooperative.

  •  Financial Literacy: Participants performed practical budgeting exercises, calculating production costs, pricing, and profit margins.

  •  Security & Planning: Sessions equipped entrepreneurs to identify financial scams and utilize safe banking practices.

3. Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability

The project ensures the long-term health of the shea parklands:

  •  Parkland Protection: A strategic meeting with the Community Advisory Committee addressed the dangers of illegal logging and deforestation.

  •  Circular Economy: Participants explored how processing waste can be repurposed into additional income streams.

Impact Spotlight: Removing Barriers to Participation

To ensure full participation, a daycare facility was established at the training venue. This allowed nursing mothers and primary caregivers to engage in every session without interruption, ensuring economic empowerment was inclusive of all women in the community.

Looking Ahead

Next quarter, the focus will shift to monitoring the implementation of the Shea Processing Centre’s business model and strengthening direct market linkages between the Zauna Beji cooperative and international buyers.
