Empowering Women in Shea: A Needs Assessment for Shea Producers in Beji, Niger State

By Aisha Ojone Abu | Project Leader

Executive Summary

During the third quarter of 2025, BLPARW successfully completed a comprehensive needs assessment aimed at understanding and documenting the challenges faced by women shea producers in Niger State. Our community-centered approach, including extensive interviews and focus group discussions, provided critical insights into the roadblocks hindering women's economic empowerment.

  • 150+ women directly engaged.
  • 12 core challenges identified, from inadequate equipment to exploitative pricing.
  • The data collected has informed a roadmap for targeted interventions that will directly benefit over 500 women and their families.

What We Accomplished

Our methodology was built on the belief that the women themselves are the experts. We adopted a hands-on approach to gather authentic data.

  • Focus Groups: We held 4 sessions with women's cooperatives, community leaders listening to their experiences with production, marketing, and finance.
  • Individual Interviews: Our team conducted interviews with cooperative leaders and members to capture personal stories and challenges.

Key Findings:

We discovered that the challenges women face are interconnected and deeply rooted. Here are some of the most pressing issues identified:

  • Technology Gap: 85% of women rely on traditional, labor-intensive processing methods, leading to inefficiency and low output.
  • Market Exploitation: 78% of producers sell their shea nuts and butter to middlemen at prices far below market value, severely impacting their income.
  • Lack of Financial Access: 92% of the women we spoke to have never accessed formal credit, preventing them from investing in better equipment or growing their businesses.
  • Organizational Weaknesses: 75% of cooperatives lack strong governance and business skills, which limits their collective bargaining power.

Your Impact: The Road Ahead

The data we have collected isn’t just numbers on a page; it’s a clear call to action. Thanks to your support, we can now confidently design and implement solutions that will have lasting impact.

Our Next Steps (Immediate Priorities):

  • Equipment Upgrades: We plan to provide modern processing equipment to 5 cooperatives, which can boost efficiency by 300% and reduce the manual labor time by 60%.
  • Capacity Building: We will launch a comprehensive training program for 200+ women to improve processing techniques and product quality, which can increase their market value by 35%.
  • Direct Market Linkages: We will work to connect 10 cooperatives directly with premium buyers, which can increase their income by 50-70% by cutting out exploitative middlemen.

A Call for Support

This quarter, we have laid the groundwork, listened to the women, understood their struggles, and documented their needs. Now, we are ready to turn these insights into tangible progress.

This is where you come in.

Your generous contribution can directly fund the solutions these women so desperately need.

  • A gift of $25 can provide a woman with essential training in improved processing techniques.
  • $100 can help a cooperative gain access to the market information they need to get fair prices.
  • $500 can contribute to purchasing modern equipment that saves hours of grueling labor and drastically improves product quality.

Join us in building a more equitable future for women in the shea value chain. Your support will not only change lives but will empower entire communities to thrive.

Looking Ahead to Q4 2025

In the coming quarter, we will transition from assessment to action. Your continued support will be vital as we begin to implement these targeted interventions and empower women to take control of their economic futures.

Stay tuned for more updates on our progress!
