Viyakulam has been waiting patiently for a loan to buy a cow. We told her this week that it will not be long before she achieves her dream. She finds it difficult to feed her family. In rural India people like her are known as coolies. They are employed by farmers to work in the fields, harvesting the sugarcane or rice paddy or other very hard manual labour.
When they do work, they are paid about $1 to $2 a day.
In India, the government don't pay unemployment assistance or the dole as it is called in Ireland. The average family is allocated a number of days paid labour at a very basic rate. Most of our families use the system and the number of days can be worked by either the father or the mother
