Progress Report on Provide Income to 250 Youth

By Alfred Lugela | Project Leader

Reporting Period: July - October 2024

Dear Supporters and GlobalGiving Community,

Thank you for your continued support of our mission to empower youth through recycling. We are pleased to share our latest progress in providing sustainable income opportunities for youth and advancing environmental conservation efforts in Mwanza - Tanzania.

Project Achievements: August - September 2024

Over the past four months, our project has made significant strides in collecting and processing plastic waste, helping to reduce pollution while creating income-generating activities for youth and women at large. Here are the key accomplishments:

  • Waste Collection: Our six collection centers collectively gathered approximately 6,142 kilograms of plastic waste. This waste was collected from youth and women, demonstrating strong community engagement and increasing awareness of recycling benefits.
  • Recycling and Processing: All collected plastic waste has been successfully transported to a recycling industry for plumbing pipes for water supply and wastewater systems. This cycle not only supports environmental sustainability but also contributes to a local circular economy.
  • Youth Engagement: The project continues to provide consistent work and income opportunities to participating youth. Each participant is gaining basic daily needs from selling those wastes and we are expecting to help those learning valuable skills that are vital for sustainable livelihoods.

Impact on Communities

By gathering plastic waste from six different centers, we have made tangible progress toward a cleaner environment in Mwanza region especially Mwanza city and Ilemela districts. This effort has inspired greater community involvement in waste management, with local businesses and residents showing an increased interest in recycling practices. The project has also highlighted the economic potential of waste management, inspiring other community members to join our efforts.

Challenges and Solutions

While our work has been productive, we continue to face challenges such as rental costs for the plot, constructing temporary buildings, registering business names, acquiring TIN and business licenses, covering transportation expenses, and meeting human resources costs. To address these, we are reaching out to stakeholders for further support to help resolve these obstacles and enhance our operations. With additional contributions, we aim not only to overcome these challenges but also to establish four more collection centers, achieving our target of ten centers to maximize our impact.

Goals for the Next Quarter

In the upcoming months, we aim to:

  • Increase Waste Collection Capacity: Aim at equipping all six centers with necessary tools to handle an increased volume of plastic waste, we are aiming at increasing four centers to reach 10 as expected before.
  • Expand Youth Training and sensitization: Provide additional training in waste sorting and management, enabling youth to know this opportunity and engage direct on it from collection to recycling.
  • Strengthen Recycling Partnerships: Work closely with recycling industries to secure higher demand and sustainable contracts for processed materials.

Appreciation and Call to Action

We extend our heartfelt thanks to each of you for your support and belief in our project. Your contributions are helping us create a greener Mwanza district without harmful to plastic wastes especially along Lake Victoria where most of us depend on its water while empowering youth with job skills and income. We encourage you to continue supporting us by spreading the word, as well as through one-time or recurring donations, which make a substantial difference in our ability to reach even more youth and expand our impact.

Thank you once again for being an essential part of this journey. Together, we are not just recycling plastic—we are building futures.
