We’re excited to share what’s been happening this term at VUSA as we continue our mission to empower children through sport, education, and holistic development.
Rugby Season Highlights
The rugby season has been a standout success. Our younger teams have shown real talent and commitment, building teamwork and confidence through regular practices and competitive matches. Their energy has lifted the whole programme and reminded us just how much potetial there is when children are given the right support.
Academic Programmes: Learning in Action
While many of our learners are far behind academically, we believe this is largely due to the shift from mother-tongue instruction to English in Grade 4. This challenge is made worse by overcrowded classrooms, overstretched teachers, and the daily trauma many children experience. Despite this, we make a point of celebrating the small wins.
Last week, one of our Grade 4 learners who is repeating the year and has long struggled with reading, completed his first full Reading Eggs section on his own. He read each question aloud and answered them correctly without any help. His teacher quietly recorded the moment he received his certificate. You can see the pride in his air punch, and afterwards, the staff gathered to celebrate with him. He still has a long road ahead, but this was a huge step forward and a moment none of us will forget.
Across our programmes:
Early Childhood Development: Our ECD work is showing real results. We would love to extend our English as a Second Language (ESL) sessions to Grades 1, 2 and 3 at the five Langa primary schools so that learners are better prepared by the time they reach the Digibus in Grade 4.
Digibus: Our mobile classroom delivers English, and Coding lessons to five local primary schools. This helps close learning gaps and builds confidence in key subjects.
Mathematics and English: Our after-school sessions combine tech platforms like Matific and Reading Eggs and Code4Kidz with small-group facilitation, giving children the attention and tools they need.
Coding: With Code4Kids, children are learning how to think critically, problem solve, and engage with technology in creative ways. For many, it’s the highlight of the week.
The New Hub: A Space for Learning and Belonging
We’re still working hard to renovate the decommissioned school building we now rent, transforming it into a warm, functional space where children can learn and thrive. The computer lab, social worker’s office, and art room are already in use. Renovations on the library and homework classroom are nearly finished, and the impact of this new space is already visible in the way children engage with learning.
Art and Music: New Avenues for Expression
Our new art and music programme has made a big difference, especially for children who aren’t drawn to rugby. These sessions give them a safe and creative outlet, and for many, it has become their favourite part of the week. It’s helping build confidence, connection, and self-expression in a way that reaches children who sometimes fall through the cracks in more traditional programmes.
Social Work Support
Our social worker, Sabelo, has added a much-needed layer of care. With government services overstretched, his role has been a real support to both our after-school programme and the five schools we work with during the day. He meets with learners who are struggling, supports families when needed, and helps us track attendance and wellbeing. He’s also hosted several community workshops. The most recent a parent workshop, which was attended by the Minister of Social Development, Jaco Londt,,which speaks to the importance of this work and the need for it in communities like ours.
Thank you for standing with us. Every win, every breakthrough, and every moment of progress is made possible by your support. We are proud of what we’ve achieved this term and look forward to continuing this journey together.
Kind regards
Nikki
