Thank you - We appreciate your support.
VUSA has had a great start in 2022. Please see a report of our year to date.
The VUSA After-school programme continues to grow from strength to strength. 2022 has seen the inclusion of Athletics as a summer sport, and obviously, Rugby remains the primary Winter sport.
One hundred eighty-two boys and girls have registered for the after-school programme. (this usually increases in Term 2 when rugby fixtures begin).
The Academic programme focuses on English and Maths support and consolidates what children learn at school. The computer software used follows the CAPS curriculum.
Learners receive an individual login and progress at their own pace, which is measurable. Children from all Langa Primary schools transition from mother-tongue learning to English as the language of instruction when they reach Grade 4. Therefore, VUSA has partnered with the Breteau Foundation, which has donated 20 One Tab tablets (A robust, dedicated tablet designed to deliver reading, writing, and numeracy skills). This programme runs for our Under 9’s. It has been implemented to prepare children for the language transition when they reach Grade 4 (VUSA’s Digibus programme works with Grade 4’s each morning to support the transition further).
VUSA introduced a pop-up library in 2021. Each Friday after training, children can come and select a book from the library, which currently holds 1300 books (English and Xhosa). Every week the book can be renewed or exchanged for a new one.
On 19 February, we hosted our first recreational outing for the year. 25 VUSA children and 13 boys from Bishops Diocesan College spent the morning on Fish Hoek Beach. Cape Town is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and many VUSA participants have little or no access to any of the beautiful spaces or places of interest that make up this incredible city. Children from Bishops and VUSA come from very different socio-economic backgrounds. Play is a beautiful way for children to get to know each other – it builds a mutual understanding between children from diverse backgrounds and is a sure-fire way to change attitudes or pre-conceived prejudices.
VUSA has employed two new staff members this year (15 in total) and has welcomed four interns from ORT-SA who support the programme. VUSA’s staff drive the programme, and as residents of the community, the children know them and trust them, and their most significant value is that children always know that they have access to a safe adult they can trust.
