Girl Child Marriage is one of the major kinds of exploitation and violence prevalent in the country and particularly in District Rahim Yar Khan and that to camouflage under the cultural and religious codes. A marriage in the childhood badly impacts social, physical and mental health of girl.
During a previously held non-formal campaign and research conducted by Jaag Welfare Movement, a worst situation found in a village of 100 households namely Chak No. 229-P, Tehsil Rahim Yar Khan where ratio of enrolment of girls in primary school is alarming because majority of them had been married and shifted to their in-laws. Even a girl of 4 years studying in nursery class knows her fiancée name. There are many women of age 25-30 in the area who is even grandmothers. The Head Teacher Miss Huma Riaz has joined her service as teacher ten Years before in the Government Girls Primary School Chak # 229. Her Students who were studying in year 2004 in Grade 4, now their children are her students.
For above mentioned reason the project "Empower 100 Child Brides in Pakistan" has started its activities in the said village with great enthusiasm and your great help in this project. Jaag has provided stationery and other material and pocket money to 20 Girls. These all girls are engaged and at risk of early Child Marriage. Other Items, School Bags, Books and Uniform will be provided when new academic year will start in April 2015.
This is a beginning of this project to empower these girls. Under this Project a vocational center has been established and Girls have started to be skilled.
I want to say thanks to all of you who have sent money to help us to start this formal project to start and continue our skills training here Pakistan. It is not just the Empowering the Girls which one day may lead to a great source of income, Jaag has decided to pass on all funds to Child Brides and spent administrative cost from other projects.
I send my thanks to you all on behalf of these girls and children. More Progress updates will be available in next quarter when we launched some advocacy events with Government to Ban Child Marriages in Punjab Province of Pakistan.
