Job Training for 100 Girls in Sierra Leone Slums

Teenage girls in the urban slums of Eastern Freetown continue to suffer the most deprivation and vulnerability. Having dropped out of school due to the poverty of their parents and they lack access to appropriate educational opportunities, they are unable to enter gainful employment as they lack skills. This leads them into abusive relationships and when they become pregnant they are further marginalised in the slum community with no sources of income or support.

The above project is designed to empower 100 teenage girls who are marginalised single mothers and are facing significant challenges to feed and clothe themselves and their children.

The project is pleased to announce that despite the lack of funding we have completed the design of appropriate courses at the slums-based YDM Vocational Training Centre so that the teenage girls can gain marketable skills which they will use as gateways to increased incomes and improved quality of life.

As reported last, the government of Sierra Leone has committed itself to pay staff salaries at the vocational institute for the vocational training of the young girls. This has gone a long way in supporting the project.

Currently we are completing the orientation process for registering the 100 teenage mothers who will benefit from the vocational training project. This involves explanations of their roles and responsibilities, choosing careers, study skills, personal organisation and the rules and regulations of the vocational training centre.

However, since the launch of the project we have been trying to raise funds but have failed to do so; as it stands now, we have not yet started getting donations from the GlobalGiving website.

We are therefore requesting our donors to generously contribute to this worthwhile project.
