Severe acute malnutrition is threatening children in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Your donation will provide life-saving treatment, therapeutic food, and medical care. With your support, we aim to : - Treat 300 children with severe acute malnutrition - Screen over 1,000 children in vulnerable communities - Strengthen local health centers to respond to nutrition emergencies
Children under five in Mongbwalu Health Zone (Djugu, Ituri - DR Congo) face a critical malnutrition crisis caused by armed conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and poor access to health services. Acute malnutrition exceeds emergency thresholds (GAM 11%, SAM 2.5%), yet no partner currently supports CMAM services. Limited access, stock-outs, and weak community screening delay treatment, putting children at high risk of preventable illness, long-term harm, and death
This project will strengthen community-based management of acute malnutrition by training community health workers, conducting active screening, and ensuring uninterrupted supply of therapeutic foods. Mobile clinics will reach hard-to-access areas, while caregivers receive nutrition education. Early detection and timely treatment will reduce complications and deaths, restore child health, and build sustainable local capacity to prevent future malnutrition crises
In the long term, the project will reduce child mortality and break the cycle of malnutrition by strengthening resilient community nutrition systems. Improved caregiver knowledge, trained local health workers, and functional referral mechanisms will ensure early detection and sustained treatment of malnutrition. Healthier children will achieve better growth, cognitive development, school performance, and future economic productivity, contributing to stronger and more resilient communities
