This project seeks support to respond to a deadly meningitis outbreak affecting vulnerable communities in Nigeria. The project will focus on community education, early case detection, hygiene promotion, and support for healthcare workers to save lives.
Nigeria is currently experiencing a severe outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM). As of Epidemiological Week 14 (March 31 - April 6, 2025), the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reports 2,911 suspected cases and 225 deaths across 24 states, including Zamfara State where HUCOMDEF is active. Children aged 5-14 years are the most affected, and many communities have limited access to timely healthcare due to fragile health systems, insecurity, and lack of transportation.
This project will support rapid emergency response to: -Conduct community education on meningitis symptoms, prevention, and early referral. -Support referrals of suspected cases to treatment centers. -Distribute basic hygiene kits to vulnerable families. -Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) and support local health workers.
The proposed emergency response will have lasting benefits beyond the immediate crisis. By strengthening community health education and promoting early disease detection, HUCOMDEF will help build more resilient local health systems capable of responding to future outbreaks and emergencies. Increased community awareness will improve health-seeking behaviors, leading to earlier treatment and better health outcomes for meningitis and other infectious diseases.
