Grant Report: Emergency Response to Meningitis

By DM Liman | Project Manager

Introduction

We are deeply grateful to GlobalGiving and its generous donors for granting HUCOMDEF $1,000 to support our Emergency Response to the Meningitis Outbreak project in Zamfara State, Nigeria. This timely support enabled us to immediately respond to an urgent public health crisis affecting vulnerable children and families.

Nigeria is facing a severe outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reporting 2,911 suspected cases and 225 deaths across 24 states as of Epidemiological Week 14 (March 31 – April 6, 2025). Children between the ages of 5–14 are the most affected. Zamfara State, where HUCOMDEF is active, is among the hardest hit.

Project Activities Implemented

With the grant, HUCOMDEF implemented the following life-saving interventions:

  1. Community Health Education:

v  Reached over 100 households across Saminaka, Damba, and Bulunku communities with awareness sessions on meningitis symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early referral.

v  Distributed IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) materials in Hausa to ensure cultural relevance and easy understanding.

  1. Support for Early Case Detection and Referrals:

v  Worked with local health volunteers to identify suspected meningitis cases.

v  Facilitated the referral of 17 suspected cases to treatment centers for timely medical care.

  1. Hygiene Promotion and Distribution of Hygiene Kits:

v  Distributed 100 basic hygiene kits (including soap, disinfectants, and water treatment tablets) to vulnerable families to reduce infection risks.

  1. Support for Healthcare Workers:

v  Provided personal protective equipment (PPE) (gloves, masks, and sanitizers) to frontline health workers in Damba Primary Health Centre.

v  Conducted a short refresher session on safe handling of suspected cases.

Impact of the Intervention

The $1,000 grant has made a significant difference:

  • Lives Saved: Early referrals ensured children and adults showing meningitis symptoms accessed medical care quickly.
  • Improved Awareness: Communities are now more knowledgeable about recognizing early symptoms and seeking help promptly.
  • Strengthened Local Health Systems: Healthcare workers were better protected and supported, increasing their confidence to continue serving communities during the outbreak.
  • Behavioral Change: Families are practicing improved hygiene and preventive behaviors that will also reduce risks of other infectious diseases.

Long-Term Benefits

While the grant addressed an urgent crisis, it has also laid a foundation for longer-term community resilience. The health education conducted has fostered better health-seeking behaviors, and the strengthened referral system will remain useful for future disease outbreaks. Communities are now more prepared to respond collectively in times of emergency.

Gratitude and Next Steps

We sincerely thank GlobalGiving for the grant and all donors for their generous contribution. Your support came at a critical time when lives were at risk. With continued partnership, HUCOMDEF aims to:

  • Expand outreach to more communities affected by meningitis.
  • Support training of additional community health volunteers.
  • Advocate for stronger state-level health preparedness and emergency response systems.

Together, we are building healthier, safer, and more resilient communities in Zamfara State and beyond.
