She had been working since dawn—cleaning houses, taking small jobs, and doing whatever work she could find. By evening she was exhausted, but stopping was not really an option. No work meant no income, and no income meant no food. That was the reality one single mother in Shabaab, Nakuru, shared with us during this week’s food distribution.
When she received a hamper, she said quietly: "At least now I can rest for a while without worrying about what my children will eat."
Her words captured what we witnessed throughout the day: in Shabaab, food insecurity is closely tied to exhaustion. Many people are working constantly, yet still struggling to provide enough for their families. This week,
Springs of Hope Foundation distributed 75 food hampers to vulnerable households in Shabaab, reaching approximately 150 adults and children. The beneficiaries included single mothers relying on irregular casual work, elderly caregivers supporting disabled family members, pregnant women with limited income, and children whose families are under additional pressure while schools remain closed.
Alongside the food distribution, children also received dresses made by women in Kijiji Mission’s tailoring training program. The dresses were part of the trainees’ practical work and provided an opportunity for the women to use their developing skills to support children in their own community.
One little girl held her new dress carefully before putting it on and standing a little taller. It was a small moment, but one that reminded us that practical support can also bring encouragement to children growing up in difficult circumstances. For many families in Shabaab, school meals provide an important source of daily nutrition.
During school closures, that safety net disappears, increasing pressure on already stretched households. The food hampers distributed this week helped reduce some of that immediate pressure and provided short-term support for families facing rising food costs and unstable incomes.
This distribution did not solve the long-term challenges facing Shabaab, but it provided real relief to households carrying heavy economic and caregiving burdens. To everyone who supports Springs of Hope Foundation, thank you.
Your generosity made it possible to provide food assistance to 75 households, support vulnerable children with clothing made through our vocational training program, and remind families in Shabaab that they have not been forgotten. Every contribution helps us continue responding to urgent needs while building stronger community support through programs that combine practical assistance with long-term empowerment.
