Medical supplies to donate to the University Fire
Dear friends,
On June 24th, Venezuela experienced the strongest seismic event in over a century. Buildings collapsed in Caracas, and La Guaira and its surrounding communities were among the hardest hit. In a country whose health system was already struggling with chronic shortages, the need was immediate and enormous.
You answered our call, and thanks to your generosity, we could act from the very first days. Here is what your donations made possible.
Equipping the rescuers on the front line
In the hours and days after the earthquake, the University Fire Brigade of the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) was on the front line, pulling people from the rubble. With your support, we provided them with more than 2,200 units of medicine and emergency supplies, including gauze, bandages, IV fluids, sutures, splints, protective equipment, antiseptics, pain relief, and respiratory medication, so they could care for the injured while rescuing them.
Safe drinking water for affected communities
With damaged infrastructure and already poor water quality, access to safe water became one of the most urgent needs. We distributed 24,200 bottles of drinking water (about 8,000 liters) across 16 sectors of the Vargas municipality, including Macuto, Naiguatá, Los Corales, Tanaguarena, Camurí Grande, Catia La Mar, and Playa Grande.
Safe blood for patients in critical condition
After a disaster, blood transfusions can save lives, but only if the blood has been properly screened. We supplied the local blood bank with screening reagents to fully test 100 blood donations, allowing up to 300 patients to receive safe transfusions at a critical moment.
Food and hygiene for displaced families
For families who lost their homes or could not safely return to them, we delivered 90 food kits with staples such as rice, pasta, flour, milk, oil and canned fish, and 60 hygiene kits with soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary pads and toilet paper, covering basic needs for nutrition and personal care.
The road ahead
Earthquakes do not end when the ground stops shaking. Many families remain displaced, and the risks of infection, poor nutrition and lack of sanitation are still very real. We will continue supporting affected communities and connect this emergency response to the public health programs Healing Venezuela has run in the country for the past ten years.
Thank you for standing with Venezuela when it needed it most. None of this would have been possible without you.
With gratitude,
Mayra Sanchez
