Embrace warmers in Unchahar Clinic
Hello Embrace friends,
Thank you for all of your support over the past few months! As of June 30th, Embrace has helped more than 87,000 premature and low birth weights infants around the world! We are so thrilled with the impact we have been able to make, however it's not always smooth sailing when we start a new program. Below is a story we would like to share with you from Unchahar Community Health Center, that highlights a challenge we sometimes have to overcome when we introduce Embrace to a new healthcare facilitiy:
When staff at the Community Health Centre of Unchahar, India first received the Embrace infant warmers, the reception was not exactly a warm one.
“We already had light bulbs and a radiant warmer. We figured we could just use those if there was need. We didn’t have time to learn about this product,” explained the Dr. Gupta, the head gynecologist at Unchahar Community Health Centre.
Indeed, time is of the essence at this health care center. The state run facility, tucked away in the Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh, India, tends to droves of patients on a daily basis. Nurses, midwives, and dayis, self-taught, often elderly women from the community, have been known to deliver up to 1000 babies per month at the facility. Employees are spread thin and worked hard and qualified doctors and gynecologists are scarce.
It wasn’t until winter that Unchahar Community Health Centre staff came to appreciate the simplicity and reliability of the Embrace infant warmer. “The temperature dropped to five to six degrees Celsius (about 40 degrees Fahrenheit) and we began to use the warmers a lot,” said Dr. Gupta. “After using Embrace during this season with intermittent electricity, we realized how truly easy and convenient the warmers are.”
Since this time, Unchahar Community Health Centre has become one of Embrace’s flagship facilities, with the warmers helping more than 300 infants suffering from hypothermia.
“Today, we wash the baby wraps regularly to maintain hygiene protocol,” explained Dr. Gupta, when asked about the ability to reuse a warmer for multiple babies. “Nurses and dayis use the warmers on their own.”
Staff nurse Ms. Maurya added, “Taking the baby’s temperature has become a regular practice in our facility. If the infant has a low temperature, straight away we use Embrace. It is part of our routine for all low birth weight and hypothermic infants.”
Embrace is honored to now play an integral role in maternal-child health care at Unchahar Community Health Centre and looks forward to a long partnership.
Thank you again for helping us work towards our goal of providing all mothers and children an equal chance to a healthy life.
Warm regards,
The Embrace Team
