Elephants Alive Shepherd Program

Over the past few months, our dedicated elephant shepherds have once again stood on the frontline of coexistence, working tirelessly to prevent human–elephant conflict during one of the most demanding times of year.

Recently, one determined bull repeatedly tested the boundaries of nearby camps, requiring constant tracking and coordinated response from our team. In other instances, small groups of elephants moved toward populated areas under cover of darkness, drawn by the scent of stored food or irrigated vegetation.

Each time, our shepherds responded swiftly, guiding elephants safely back toward more suitable habitat before damage could occur.

Night after night, often working long hours in challenging conditions, they monitor elephant movements, interpret behaviour, and make split-second decisions that protect both people and wildlife. Their presence prevents escalation, reduces risk, and allows potentially volatile encounters to end peacefully.

Their work is not dramatic in appearance, but it is profoundly impactful.
Every redirected elephant represents:

• A life, human and elephant, kept safe

Our shepherds combine deep local knowledge, patience, courage, and an unwavering commitment to coexistence. They understand the personalities of individual bulls, the rhythms of the landscape, and the delicate balance required to share space with Africa’s giants.

We are immensely proud of our South African shepherds. Their resilience, professionalism, and quiet bravery remain at the heart of our mission, ensuring that coexistence is not just an ideal, but a daily reality.
