El Nino Floods Emergency Response Kenya ( URGENT )

Community Focus Group is preparing for the possibility of renewed El Niño-related weather conditions in Kenya. El Niño events can contribute to unusually heavy rainfall in parts of East Africa, increasing the risk of flooding, landslides, waterborne diseases, destruction of homes and infrastructure, crop losses, and disruption of livelihoods. In view of the potential impacts, CFG  is seeking to strengthen preparedness, early response, and coordination before severe weather occurs.

Meteorological Situation and Risk

According to seasonal weather forecasts and early-warning information issued by relevant meteorological authorities in Kenya , communities should remain alert to changing rainfall patterns and possible episodes of heavy rainfall. While the exact location, intensity, and timing of impacts may vary, vulnerable areas, particularly those near rivers, flood-prone settlements, low-lying areas, and unstable slopes, require early preparation.

CFG  recognizes that early action can significantly reduce loss of life and property. We will continue monitoring official weather advisories and sharing verified information with residents through community meetings, mobile communication, local leaders, and other available channels.

Community Focus Group (CFG)  plans to establish an emergency coordination team responsible for monitoring weather information and coordinating local action. We will identify households and individuals requiring additional assistance, including children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable families.

We will also identify safe areas and evacuation routes, clear drainage channels where possible, protect water sources, encourage households to secure important documents and essential belongings, and promote household emergency preparedness. Health awareness activities will focus on safe drinking water, sanitation, hygiene, prevention of waterborne diseases, and prompt reporting of illness.

Farmers will be encouraged to follow agricultural and weather advisories, protect livestock, improve drainage around farms, and take appropriate measures to reduce potential crop and livestock losses.

Community Response Plan

If flooding or other severe weather occurs, CFG  will activate its local response mechanism. Volunteers will assist with early warnings, evacuation support, first aid referrals, identification of affected households, and communication with local authorities and humanitarian partners.

CFG  will prioritize saving lives, protecting vulnerable people, preventing disease outbreaks, and supporting families whose homes or livelihoods are affected. We will maintain records of affected households and urgent needs to improve coordination and accountability.

Request for Preparation Support

We respectfully request support from Individuals , GlobalGiving , government agencies, humanitarian organizations, development partners, donors, and other stakeholders to strengthen our preparedness capacity. Priority needs include emergency food supplies, clean water and water-treatment materials, hygiene and sanitation supplies, first-aid materials, emergency shelter items, blankets, protective clothing, communication equipment, evacuation support, and training for community volunteers.

We also request technical support for disaster-risk reduction, early-warning systems, community awareness, drainage improvement, and emergency coordination.

At Community Focus Group we believe  that preparedness before an emergency is essential to reducing the impact of El Niño-related hazards. With timely information, adequate resources, trained volunteers, and strong cooperation among communities and partners, we can protect lives, reduce losses, and respond more effectively to emergencies.
