Since the construction of the coops, the egg project has done extraordinarily well! Students have benefited from more protein in their diets and have helped contribute to their community. Each secondary class, 7th through 9th grade is responsible for one of the four coops on the MCLC campus. Students are expected to feed the chickens, clean the coops, keep track of laid eggs and report any structural damage to the management team. A fourth chicken coop is underway for the inaugural 10th grade class. This is where students will try to identify the most sustainable ways to further the project.
Overall, the chicken project promotes responsibility, group collaboration, and leadership. For instance, one ninth grader showed exceptional interest in the project. The MCLC director committee selected her to attend a training day on the mainland with the agronomist who sold the school their chickens. She learned valuable information such as how much feed yields the most eggs. As the chickens reproduce and the students learn more about sustaining the project, the community will be provided with a healthier diet and potentially a new source of household income.
