The difference between a child of low and high socioeconomic level in 3rd grade of primary school is equivalent to almost two years of schooling.
School dropout is most notable among Spanish children and adolescents whose families are at risk of poverty and social exclusion. In Spain, the existence of a public education system might lead one to believe that all children are guaranteed access to free, quality education, but unfortunately this is not always the case.
One in three Spanish children are at risk of poverty or social exclusion and the socioeconomic conditions of their families have an impact on their education. This is demonstrated by this data: 16.7% of students were forced to leave school prematurely, according to a study conducted by the Esade Center for Economic Policy (EsadeEcPol).
In addition, this paper shows how the difference in income and socioeconomic status between two children of the same age affects their educational level. An example: the difference between a child of low socioeconomic level and a high one in a course such as 3rd grade of primary school, in subjects such as mathematics and language, is equivalent to almost two years of difference in schooling.
