In our last progress report we discussed the new eco/educational tourism project that LRFF is embarking on. The Educational Reforestation project is a perfect example of this type of project on a very small scale.

The Gonzalez family have been offering environmental education to local schools and tourists on their small property for years. They have converted this old farm into organic gardens, a nursery and have even created a pond to attract waterfowl and other aquatic life.

The only land remaining that hasn’t been developed for the tourism project is the ½ hectare (approximately 1 ½ acres) that comprises this project, Educational Reforestation. School began here in Costa Rica again last week and the Gonzalez’s and LRFF are hoping to implement this planting as soon as possible. In this way the local students will have an opportunity to create the nursery that will supply the 500 trees, care for the nursery for six months and also participate in the planting.

We have done projects like this with local schools in the La Reserva neighborhood and it is amazing to see how involved the students get. They thoroughly enjoy learning how and where to collect seedlings and seeds on the forest floor and then planting these in their awaiting nursery. A great transformation can be observed in each and every one of them as they care for the trees and when the day comes that they are planted.

Come on everybody…
