Over the past couple of months, students in Santiago have been transitioning between in-person and remote learning as local COVID-19 rates fluctuate. Although students have endured many uncertainties this school year, one thing has remained constant – the monthly donations that sponsored students receive to cover school fees, school supplies, and medical care!
Pueblo a Pueblo is currently supporting 54 primary school students, 19 middle school students, 3 high school students, and 5 university students! Each month families visit the center to check in with Pueblo a Pueblo staff and to receive their monthly share of the educational sponsorship.
For primary school students, these monthly donations are directly applied to the student's school fees and their ability to visit a local school supply store and medical clinic free of charge. For students in the higher grades, families receive monthly donations in cash form, allowing them to pay for school fees, supplies, and more recently, for wireless data so that students can log into online classes.
During the periods of remote learning, primary school students have been receiving instructional packets that parents pick up from schools and return each week. For older students, homework and instruction are delivered online in varying capacities. High school and college students receive direct virtual instruction, making access to the internet a necessity.
While currently, only Guatemalans aged 35 and older are permitted to receive the vaccine, we are hopeful that it will become available for younger Guatemalans soon! Just recently, university students were granted special permission to begin receiving the vaccine so that they can resume in person classes.
Throughout the pandemic, while students have had to navigate many challenges, Pueblo a Pueblo has ensured that they have never had to worry about where their school fees would come from. With your support, we have been able to provide these students with education during one of the most challenging times our global community has ever endured.
Thank you for continuing to believe in our mission. Without your support, we would not be able to do the work that we do!
