By Djemson Jeudy | Education Program Manager
Time goes by so quickly! At REBUILD globally, we were so proud to celebrate the graduation of two students in our Education Program on June 17. Cindia and Ylarie graduated high school with top marks - an accomplishment that is difficult to achieve in Haiti.
In order to understand how tremendous this accomplishment is, let's look at the statistics:
-- 50% of children in Haiti do not attend school (World Bank 2013)
-- 30% of children who attend school do not make it to the third grade (UNICEF 2008)
-- 60% of children who attend school will drop out before the sixth grade (UNICEF 2008)
-- 29% of people over the age of 25 in Haiti attended secondary school (USAID 2015)
Cindia and Ylarie defied the odds, and worked hard with our tutors and mentors to accomplish their goals, and become leaders in their community. They are the future for Haiti and a model of success for our other students. Cindia would like to become a nurse to help others by serving their country: “I would never have been able to finish school this year without REBUILD globally and everyone who helps this organization run.” Cindia told our Education Program Manager upon her graduation.
To celebrate the fact that ALL of 30 students passed their classes and final exams this year, we traveled to the beach to enjoy our beautiful country and welcome summer vacation! The new school year is just around the corner, however, and we have already begun the purchasing of books and uniforms for students. As Cindia and Ylarie graduated, they will both be offered employment opportunities at our workshop and training center in Port Au Prince to help supplement the costs of their higher education, and jump-start their career.
As they transition, we were able to welcome two new students to take their place in the program! Joseph, a junior, will join us in the Fall, as well as Altus, an eigth grader! We can't wait to introduce you to these bright new students. Stay tuned!
Finally, we would like to say thank you to all of the generous donors who make this program possible. We are witnessing a literal transformation in our students lives. Georgeson, a young man who has spent his entire childhood working on the streets to earn enough money to survive, came into our program last year with a hard attitude, and a tough perspective. When he came to our office last week to drop off his report card, his entire disposition was changed. He was smiling brightly and walked in with his head held high. When asked what this change represented he told our Education Program Manager, "Education changed my life completely. Now I feel that I have a place in the society and can contribute to the Development of Haiti."
Thank you for the part you all play in making this transformation possible. We appreciate you!!
