Education & Safety for Rural Girls Matale Uganda

After the original work that focused on remodeling the classrooms, constructing a science lab and equipping it (2002-2009), Matale Senior Secondary School is in better shape. Some key highlights are;

• A new principal, Mr. George Ssozi with a success track record, innovation and leadership too helm in 2011.
• A new board of governors, including women in the community was appointed in November 2011.  They oversee the governance and accountability of the schoool.
• Educational performance is improving at the school, as measured by performance in Uganda's O'level national exams.  For the first time in its history, Matale produced the best honors student in Rakai district.
• Four new science teachers have been hired, resulting in better performance in sciece subjects as mentioned above.
• Student enrollment increased from 320 students in 2010 to 420 students in 2011, a 31% increase.
• The number of girl students enrolled grew from 150 in 2010 to 220 in 2011. This is in target of the 300 girls we hope the Girls' Dormitory will serve when completed.
• Specioza Naliggo, one of the students who came on the first 2009 cultural exchange between Matale and Southridge high school was the top girl student at St. Andrews Senior Secondary School Matale in the 2011 O'Level exams.  Currently, Specioza is pursuing her A’Level education at an all-girls senior secondary school, St. Theresa Bwanda, located in neighboring Masaka distrit.  Last time we talked, Specioza wanted to study to become a nurse.

With that, we still have a long way to go.  However, we believe that the same hardwork that is starting to produce results at Matale since the construction of the Science Lab will translate into results with the Girls' Dorm.
