By victoria kritzell | director of fundraising,
In January, the decision was made to bring in 15 new children who had been waiting for months to be admitted. We had originally planned to wait until more of our 60 unsponsored children had been funded, but these children were at such high risk, we realized we needed to step out in faith and trust that the money to care for them would follow. Shortly after they were brought in, our Administrator found two little brothers in town (ages 10 and 8), eating from garbage bins, dressed in rags, with no hope of survival. He immediately contacted us, and of course we agreed to take them.
All seventeen were given health checks, and are now safely living in our cozy dorms with warm beds and clean clothing. They are attending classes in our Hope Center Academy, and love school so much they run to class when the bell rings in the morning. For the first time in their young lives (they are ages 3 to 13), they can fill their stomachs with good food, as much as they can hold. They are learning how to be a child, as their lives before Hope Center were ones of basically suffering and begging. With us, they will get a good education not only academically, but also in life skills. Helping on the farm to grow crops, caring for the bunnies, goats, cows and chickens, kitchen duties, and learning how to take care of their bodies and minds in an atmosphere of love and encouragement will set their feet on the right path for the future.
Still, our waiting list grows. It is sad, as we have the room and the staff to care for even more, but not the money. As soon as we can get at least some of these children's costs covered, we can bring in more.
