Communities Taking Action on the Climate Crisis

By Comunicacion Cooperacion Comunitaria | Projecto Leader

The community learn on the right to water.
The community learn on the right to water.

The challenge
For rural families in Mexico, the climate crisis means facing ongoing risks. For millennia, their knowledge of natural cycles helped them know when to plant and harvest. Now, the climate crisis is threatening their way of life.

In the Tseltal communities of Chilón, Chiapas, water levels in rivers and springs continue to fall. Droughts damaged crops this year, and now torrential rains are flooding fields and washing away fertile soil.

What are we doing together with the Tseltal communities of Chilón?
We are working with Tseltal communities in Chilón, Chiapas, to strengthen community organization so they can manage and care for their own water resources. With support and technical training from Cooperación Comunitaria, community members organize and learn to build solutions: they use ecological technologies to save water and improve sanitation, care for their fields and coffee plantations through agroecological practices, and restore forests through reforestation.

Everything they learn gives them another tool to care for water and sustain life in their territory.

Results
In 2026, 2,700 people have received training in building fuel-efficient wood-burning stoves that reduce the use of trees for fuel; dry toilets that use no water and do not cause pollution; and rainwater harvesting systems that reduce the need for women to walk for hours to collect even a small amount of water.

Families also learn how to care for rivers and springs, plant trees, and use agroecological practices to manage their crops and protect the soil from erosion and landslides.

Why are your donations important?
Your contributions will enable communities to begin building their own biofilters to treat greywater
for reuse in hygiene tasks and to water backyard gardens.

Your continued commitment helps communities keep learning how to strengthen their autonomy to face the climate crisis.

Thank you for helping turn what communities learn today into water for tomorrow’s homes, soils, and crops!
