In Mexico, rural communities hold a deep relationship with their territories and shared resources. In Chiapas, forests safeguard life: rivers and springs are born within them; their vegetation supports rainfall cycles and groundwater recharge; and they help reduce the risk of landslides. The relationship between water and organic matter keeps the soils fertile, nourishing the milpas. Forest is territory, and territory is identity, memory and legacy.
You Can Make Possible
Thanks to the contributions received through GlobalGiving, in Chilón, 122 families are caring for their natural shared resources and preventing the contamination of soils and water sources through the construction of dry toilets and rainwater harvesting systems, known in Spanish as SCALL, as well as the establishment of agroecological and agroforestry systems for cultivation and reforestation. In 2026, the process continues with the community-led production of fuel-efficient cookstoves and biofilters for greywater treatment.
Impact
This set of agroecological and reforestation actions, together with the use of ecotechnologies, is already beginning to bear fruit: communities are strengthening their knowledge of the relationship between forests, soil, and water, expanding their technical capacities, and consolidating their autonomy and care for their territory.

Bosque, suelo y agua: una relación que sostiene la vida
En México, las comunidades rurales mantienen una relación profunda con sus territorios y bienes comunes. En Chiapas, los bosques resguardan la vida: en ellos nacen ríos y manantiales; su vegetación favorece los ciclos de lluvia y la recarga hídrica; ayudan a reducir el riesgo de deslaves. La relación entre el agua y la materia orgánica mantiene fértiles los suelos que nutren las milpas. El bosque es territorio, y el territorio es identidad, memoria y legado.
¿Qué puedes hacer?
Gracias a las aportaciones recibidas a través de GlobalGiving, en Chilón, 122 familias cuidan sus bienes naturales y evitan la contaminación de los suelos y las fuentes de agua, a partir de la construcción de sanitarios secos y Sistemas de Captación de Agua de Lluvia, así como con el establecimiento de sistemas agroecológicos y agroforestales para cultivar y reforestar. En 2026, el proceso continúa con la autoproducción de estufas ahorradoras de leña y de biofiltros para el tratamiento de aguas grises.
Impacto
El conjunto de acciones agroecológicas y de reforestación, más el uso de ecotecnologías ya comienza a dar frutos: las comunidades fortalecen sus conocimientos sobre la relación entre el bosque, el suelo y el agua, aumentan sus capacidades técnicas y consolidan su autonomía y el cuidado de su territorio.
