Prevent Sexual Abuse by Educating Girls

When in Nairobi, I spend many of my days with children who are survivors of sexual violence. Children as young as 3 come to Freely in Hope partnering centers where we give space for them to be children again—limitless, courageous, and free. Through art therapy, they recreate their world through vivid colors and shapes and dreams. Through singing, they reclaim their concealed voices. Through dancing, they break free from psychological restraints and embrace their bodily right to movement.

And many times, I forget—I forget that they are survivors of unspeakable pains that they should have never been forced to endure. Though they have survived violence with incredible strength and tenacity, they are still children. Children who teach me how to be a child again—limitless, courageous, and free.

Together with children around the world, I celebrate this season where there is hope—hope to dance, to create beauty, to reject what is, and embrace what could be.
