With the generous support of local officals and donations from wonderful individuals, we were able to purchase our own land in August, start building our very own dormitory in December and complete the project this March! Currently we have 15 girls living in the dormitory, and next year we will have 20 girls living with us and attending secondary school. We've had many great volunteers this year who have helped us paint the dormitory, teach the girls fun games and educational lessons, and run workshops to teach the girls about topics such as self-esteem and how to craft a resumé. Thanks to our tutors, who are all local teachers, the girls are all doing great in school and continue to be grateful for their education.
Our first graduate, Dina, is now attending an accounting school in Urubamba while she helps us create business plans for the bakery we are starting so we can become self-sustainable. Once the bakery is up and running, Dina will work as the accountant there! We are so proud of her growth, and her interest in pursuing a career she enjoys. Her previous vocational training, dedication and leadership makes her a perfect person to help run the bakery. We know this position will be an excellent experience for Dina and help her with economic independence and work skills, as well as fostering her creative abilities. She has shown great interest in wanting to give back to a program that enabled her to acquire her secondary degree and continue studying in her area of interest. She has expressed a desire to train other girls, once she feels settled in the position, and to become even more involved in the bakery and the community’s success.
We are so happy to now have our own building where we can expand to accomodate girls when it is right for our organization. Having our own land and building saves us money, that we can then reinvest in the community and in the girl's education. We are so thankful for all the support we've recieved through the building of the dormitory, and we are excited to get started on the bakery. It will not only help us become self-sustainable, but it will also expand our educational support and opportunities while teaching the girls vocational skills and economic indepdence post graduation.
