A Second Chance at Childhood: Rahima’s Journey Back to School

In a small vulnerable settlement of Kolkata, 11-year-old Rahima has already faced losses and hardships far beyond her age. Losing both parents at such a young stage of life left her emotionally shattered and without the protection and care every child deserves. After their passing, Rahima received no support from her paternal family, leaving her completely neglected and vulnerable.

Today, Rahima lives with her elderly maternal grandmother, who became her only source of love, care, and protection. However, survival itself has been a daily struggle for the family. Her grandmother earns a living through rag picking — collecting recyclable waste from streets and dumping grounds under difficult and unsafe conditions. The income is extremely low and irregular, often insufficient even for daily meals.

As financial pressure increased, Rahima’s education was pushed to the edge of discontinuation after completing Class V. The family could not afford admission fees, books, uniforms, or basic educational materials. There was a growing fear that Rahima would eventually be forced into child labour simply to help the household survive. Like many vulnerable children living in extreme poverty, her childhood and future were slowly slipping away.

When Rahima’s situation was identified, immediate counselling and support were provided to her grandmother. Through continuous discussions, the importance of education and the long-term dangers of child labour were explained. Emotional encouragement and educational assistance helped the family regain hope during an extremely difficult period.

With timely intervention and educational support, Rahima was successfully admitted to Class VI. Her admission-related expenses and essential educational needs were supported, ensuring that her learning journey did not come to an end. Today, Rahima attends school regularly and continues her education with renewed confidence and hope for the future.

The change in Rahima’s life may appear small from the outside, but for her, it has meant the difference between losing her childhood and rebuilding her dreams. She now has the opportunity to learn, grow, and move toward a safer and more independent future instead of being pushed into labour and exploitation.

Rahima’s story reflects the reality faced by countless orphaned children living in poverty — children who are at constant risk of dropping out of school due to financial hardship and lack of family support. It also demonstrates how timely educational assistance and compassionate intervention can completely alter the course of a child’s life.

Today, Rahima’s smile, school attendance, and determination stand as symbols of resilience and hope. Continued support will play a vital role in ensuring that she remains in school, protected from child labour, and empowered to build a brighter future for herself.

Every investment in a child’s education becomes an investment in dignity, protection, and opportunity. Rahima’s journey reminds us that when vulnerable children are given support at the right moment, they are not only saved from hardship — they are given a real chance to dream again.
